Going to My FIRST Solo Concert and Chilling With the Bestie in Kansas City
I have been going to concerts since I was about 13. (In fact, my first real concert
was Nickelback and Breaking Benjamin. Can you tell I had a pretty awesome "sis?" Thanks Kelly!)
And over the course of the, gosh, 14 years that I have been going to concerts I have
probably attended over 70, but never once have I gone to one by myself. I have always had
at least one concert buddy (usually Kristin) to go to the concert with. However, about
2 years ago I came across tickets for a Kenny Chesney concert at Arrowhead Stadium
with some killer big name openers and was faced with a dilemma. After
asking around not a single one of my friends or family could go for whatever
reason. I really wanted to go to this concert though and so I decided to be brave and
purchased, for the first time ever, one single concert ticket. My heart was racing so fast
when I did it and then COVID struck and the concert was rescheduled, and then
rescheduled again, and then rescheduled again. Finally, the final reschedule date
stuck and it was off to Kansas City I went. Scroll on down to see how my first solo concert went and how I turned it into a great excuse for a weekend getaway in KC with my bestie Abigail.
.
I left for Kansas City Friday night after work, picked up some Chick Fil A on
the way (of course), and then arrived at Abigail’s apartment around 9pm. We stayed
up until almost midnight talking about my recent heartbreak, jobs, and general life
updates (and of course had to watch Mai Pham’s latest YouTube video) before heading off to bed.
.
After our late night both Abigail and I slept in till almost 10am Saturday morning (something I haven’t
done in a LONG time) and then decided to go and walk around at the local Family
Tree Nursery to try and get my mind off of the boy problems. You just can’t be sad when surrounded
by plants! Plus I figured it would also be a safe place I could go where I wouldn’t
spend any money, but I was wrong. I walked out of there a plant mom once again
with a new pothos plant and a little baby cactus that was just way too cute to leave behind.
.
I mean come on....look at him! Waaaay too cute! 😍
.
After the plant nursery we were starting to feel a little hungry so we made our
way to our restaurant choice of the day, KC Mac N’ Co.

Once we finished eating we went back to Abigail’s apartment and I got ready
for my big event of the night, the Kenny Chesney concert at Arrowhead
Stadium, and Abigail got ready to go bowling with some friends.
.
.
It took me about an hour to get into the stadium and find a parking spot. It looked like
people had been there all day long tailgating like it was game day and I actually
had to park over in the Royals stadium parking lot because everywhere at Arrowhead was full.
.
I walked into the stadium and found my seat which was a heck of a lot closer
than I was expecting! I just kept getting closer and closer to the field and the
stage. I couldn't believe it. I sat down just as Carly Pearce was singing “What He
Didn’t Do” which had me crying in my seat since I had just decided to leave someone
that I loved and cared about a lot for the same reasons she was singing about not
even 24 hours before. So safe to say I was an emotional wreck for the rest of her
set, which was only about 3 songs, but she did an absolutely amazing job
and I wish I would have gotten there a little earlier to have seen more from her.
.
.
After Carly was Old Dominion who was really the band that sold me on this concert.
Don’t get me wrong…I love Kenny, but I don’t think I would have shelled out the cash I
did for those tickets if Old Dominion wasn’t one of the openers. I loved their set so
much and I was jamming along to every single song especially “I Was on A Boat That Day.”

.
The third and final openers were Dan and Shay annnnnd we were back to being emotional
Amy because of course every single song they sang was a love song. I honestly
about walked out to go cry in the bathroom, but made myself stay and held those tears
in like a boss! Lol Don't get me wrong, both Dan and Shay did a great job. It was seriously
just really poor timing for me.
.
.
Then, finally, after all the openers, the lights began to come on in the stadium as
night started to creep its way in and Kenny took the stage. Y’all let me tell you, this man
puts on a damn good show! Think Garth Brooks level good. He was running and
jumping all around the stage while singing his heart out and you couldn’t help but have a
great time. He looked like he was having an absolute blast and every song he played was
a straight banger of course. It was honestly one of the best performances I have attended.
No wonder why he is still one of the best after all these years, which, speaking of that.
This man doesn’t look like he has aged at all. He still looks the same as he did in the 90s!
So ummm Kenny man….what’s your secret?! I just started getting carded at the liquor
store and I am not even 30 yet so clearly I need the help. Lol

Overall I have to admit…I was a little nervous to be going to such a big concert alone, but
luckily I didn’t have any issues (aside from getting soaked by the rain after halfway through!) and
I had a pretty great time! I am so glad that I decided to go even if it was by myself and
now I won't hesitate the next time there's a concert I want to go to, but friends can't.
.
I got back to Abigail’s after 11pm which is waaaay past my bedtime so we pretty
much both decided to turn in for the night right away and then slept in yet
again Sunday morning.
.
This was the day I was planning on heading home, but I didn’t have to leave until
that evening so we decided it was time for me to experience yet another first
in Kansas City and go to IKEA.
.
.
Okay so this place is freakin’ HUGE. The entire top floor is just showrooms where
they showcase all their products and then the bottom level is where you can go to buy
the things you saw and liked. And it even has its own parking garage. I was SHOOK.
.
We walked around the top floor looking at all the setups for a couple hours collecting
ideas for our spaces and then stopped at the IKEA cafe for a late lunch.
.
.
After eating we continued on to the lower level and began collecting some goodies.
Now I wasn't planning on buying anything except for maybe a couple of Alex drawers
for my walk in closet. Instead I walked out of there with a ton of kitchen stuff and an
over 5ft tall yucca plant.
.
Our haul! Sometimes you gotta just let the store tell you what you need. lol
.
We got back to Abigail's apartment and then it was time, sadly, for me to head on
home. We loaded up all my new goodies, had a couple of tearful hugs goodbye, and
off I went to a 4th of July BBQ back home. Abigail, I’m all ready for our next weekend
adventure whenever you are!
